EDUCATION NOTES:

CHANGE IN COURSE
The Adult bible Study is completing the study of Leviticus and will begin a study of the book of Acts. We invite all to come and learn about the birth of the church in the first century and its growth through the witness of the Apostles and their disciples. Learn with us about the major contributors to our faith and their experiences as we see their passion for sharing with others the message of God’s reconciling grace through Jesus Christ. Join us as we wrap up Leviticus with a discussion of the insights we gained through studying the law that Christ fulfilled. Stop by – give us a try!

Coffee with Pastor Every 4th Sunday there will be an opportunity after every service to have coffee with the Pastor. We will meet in the fellowship hall in the area in front of the stage. This is an opportunity to increase communication and answer questions you may have. When appropriate, your questions will be forwarded to the appropriate board or council officer.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School meets from 9:15 till 10:15.  There is a place for every member of the family.

There are three classes for elementary children:

·        Age 2 through PreKindergarten

·        Kindergarten through Grade 2

·        Grades 3 through 5.

There are also three catechumen classes preparing your students for Affirmation of Baptism:

·           Grade 6 (Old Testament)

·           Grade 7 (New Testament)

·           Grade 8 (Catechism).

The Young Adult Class is for high school youth grades 9 through 12.

Three classes are offered for adults on Sunday morning:

·        LOL (Lessons of Life) applying biblical principles to everyday life

    ·        PIPs (People in the Parlor meeting elsewhere until renovations are complete) studying different topics of biblical concerns

·        Adult Bible Study focusing on books of the Bible.

Another ministry of the Sunday School needs volunteer caregivers in the nursery so that young families can attend the class of their choice.  If you feel led to participate in this ministry, please get in touch with Sunday School Coordinator, Ron White, or, Associate for Family Ministry, Rex Rachel

Diakonia Class for Lutherans Diakonia is a two-year program for those ELCA members who wish to study and grow for further service in parish and neighborhood ministries.

The process occurs in three basic ways:

    By thorough grounding in the classic church-leadership disciplines and practical, systematic, historical and Biblical theology;

    By identifying particular skills and aptitudes in ministry, and encouraging their use in the local parish;

    By providing spiritual growth through worship, retreats, and a supportive community of fellow students, mentor and instructors.

The primary theme and focus of diakonia is the work of Jesus in scripture (e.g. Mark 10:43); “Let the one who would be great among you be your servant (Greek: diakonos).”

The curriculum consists of 12 courses, six per year. Each course has 6 sessions that meets weekly for 3 hour sessions. Cost is $360 for the two-year program,   payable up front or paid by class. Financial aid is available  for the program.

For more information about the program please contact Kathy --Mandarin Lutheran Church, local site manager.

Not just for children! We all need to keep on track with our learning of the Word and about the Word. For adults we have three Sunday School classes.

The Adult Bible Study (ABS) meets in the Assembly Room and is beginning a study on Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. Paul wants to continue his missionary work in Spain and wants to stop and visit with the church in Rome. This letter is his introduction to them and outlines his understanding of the Gospel. The class will use Luther’s commentary on Romans as a study guide.

The People in the Parlor (PIPS) will continue the study of various doctrines of the church and most recently discussed election and pre-destination. Each week is a new topic with discussion sheets downloaded from the ELCA.

The Tortys, those of the 20-, 30-, 40-something age group, are going to be studying social issues and the church in room 207. Using social statements adopted by the ELCA, they will look at abortion, the death penalty and poverty among other issues facing our nation today. Each class is open to everybody and anybody and even the Tortys can make an exception. Expand your world and increase your knowledge about the Word at one of these classes.
