“DUST YOU ARE AND TO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN”

   This is recorded in Genesis as the words of the Lord to Adam after he had partaken of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. More than discerning good from evil came the power to decide what is good and evil. Even with faith and biblical knowledge, we continue to try to decide for ourselves what is good for us instead of being obedient to God’s desire for us. As Paul reminds us, “while everything is available to us does not mean it is necessarily good for us.” We are reminded of that decision making and its possible consequences for us when we gather for Ash Wednesday and the placing of ashes on our forehead. But even in that context we are reminded of God’s love for us and that dust is not the end.
